Clicker Activities:Demonstration predictions - students will make predictions about various demonstrations relating to the gas laws. They will either work alone or in groups to make their predictions. Student engagement increases when predictions are made prior to observing a science demonstration. In addition, if the demonstration prediction questions are given to the students 1-3 days in advance, students' study habits will be positively affected
Clicker Activities:Concept questions - students will answer embedded concept questions during a lesson on gas laws. They will work individually or in groups as the clicker questions increase engagement throughout the lesson
Clicker Activities:Scenario-based questions - working individually, students will read scenarios about each of the gas laws. Then, working in groups, they will use the gas laws to answer questions about each scenario and identify the law(s) used to answer each question. This activity is a good formative assessment designed to provide feedback about the students' understanding about gas laws

What students must know:
  • Students will know what is meant by pressure
  • Students will know how pressure, volume, molar amount, and temperature are related in gaseous systems
  • Students will know the six main gas laws (Boyle, Charles, Gay-Lussac, Combined, Avogadro and Ideal Gas Law)
  • Students will know under what conditions a gas behaves ideally

What students must understand:
  • Students will understand the qualitative relationship between pressure, temperature, volume and molar amount for all gases
  • Students will understand the concept of an ideal gas and when you can quantitatively apply the ideal gas law

What students must be able to do:
  • Use the gas laws both qualitatively and quantitatively to predict the result of a change to one of the variables
  • Calculate different variables for ideal gases
  • Explain the qualitative trends of different variable for all gases

Clicker Activity: A multiple choice summative assessment, designed for students to complete individually, will test students on each of the topics from unit seven. The assessment will include vocabulary, identification, classification and concept questions
